THE RUNDOWN
DBU shut out Valparaiso, 3-0, in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Emory G. Bauer Field. An impressive pitching performance in game one turned into a dominant day on the mound as
Chandler Arnold and
Zach Heaton led the Pats to their third shutout win this season. Arnold earned the win with 5.0 innings of scoreless baseball, and Heaton notched his second save of the season in a 4.0 inning no-hitter.Â
With the win, the Pats swept the doubleheader and won their seventh series of the year. DBU (29-17, 8-6) extended its winning streak to four and continued its upward trend as the regular season draws to a close.Â
After both teams swapped zeroes in the first inning, DBU jumped out in front in the second frame.
Cole Moore opened the inning with a left-field double and
Andrew Benefield joined him on the basepaths with a single to left field. With two on and nobody out,
Blayne Jones crushed a double down the left-field line to drive in Moore. But after conceding the game's first run, Valpo starting pitcher Jake Miller sat down the next three batters he faced and forced the Patriots to settle for a 1-0 lead.Â
Chandler Arnold silenced the Beacons through the middle innings as DBU struck for two more in the fifth.
Jace Grady reached on a base hit into left field and stole second to put pressure on Valparaiso. Then,
Ryan Wrobleski drilled a triple into right field that brought Grady home. With Wrobleski on third and two outs,
Blayne Jones delivered once again with an RBI single down the left-field line.Â
After giving up just two hits through his 5.0 inning start, Arnold handed the baseball to
Zach Heaton in the sixth inning. The redshirt junior immediately retired the side in order to speed up a game that was already moving at a blistering pace.Â
Heaton tore through the Valporasio lineup in the late innings. He pitched around a leadoff walk in the eighth before ending the game with back-to-back punchouts in the ninth. Â
